Nursing Assistant 1

The Nursing Assistant 1 program was developed to meet the requirements of the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN).  It meets both federal and Oregon state guidelines for Nursing Assistant training programs.  Those wishing to take the Nursing Assistant certification examination offered by the OSBN must first complete an approved Nursing Assistant training program.

This program is a 150 hour course that prepares students for the state examination.  It includes 75 hours of instruction in the classroom and skills laboratory and 75 hours of supervised hands-on work experience in a nursing home setting.

It is important to recognize that ONLY the Oregon State Board of Nursing can certify an individual as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).  Individual programs do not offer certification but instead prepare students and allow them to become eligible to take the OSBN examination.

What happens in the classroom?  Students learn the basic principles of patient care such as how to take vital signs, assist with a bath or shower, feed those who cannot feed themselves, assist with  toileting activities, observe changes in their patients’ conditions and many other aspects of care.  Students complete reading assignments outside of class, and the material is discussed in class.  The instructor uses several teaching tools such as overhead projector or Power Point presentations, videos, and flash cards, but most of the classroom time is spent in interactive activities.  Students will discuss and role-play many of the topics.  They will practice required skills in the skills laboratory which is part of the classroom.  They will, for example, feed each other and brush each other’s teeth.  They will perform range-of-motion exercises on each other and take turns playing patient and nursing assistant.

The founder of Quick! Nursing Assistant Training believes that people learn best when they feel relaxed and comfortable, so the environment is somewhat informal.  Lectures are kept brief and are infused with stories to illustrate the points being discussed.  While students are encouraged to enter the discussion, they are never forced to do so.

Students are given mid-term and final examinations.  These are multiple choice questions.  The mid-term exam is given to help students and instructor assess the students' own progress.  The final exam requires a minimum grade of 75% to pass, but extensive review is provided to aid students in the process.  Students must demonstrate skills satisfactorily for the instructor, but the process of skills demonstration is designed to be a fun learning experience rather than a screening tool.

The clinical experience gives students the opportunity to practice skills on real patients and work alongside CNA’s under the watchful eye of the instructor.
